Rick Margitza

This is new

This album was state of the art in 1991. Margitza’s tenor is dry and sinewy, rhythmically straight and driving, passionate right up to an extreme and yet thoroughly controlled altissimo, but distinguished above all by the harmonically advanced and frequently experimental note choices. The quartet, which includes Joey Calderazzo on piano, Robert Hurst on bass and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts on drums, play some of the most frequently covered standards in the history of jazz, such as ‘On Green Dolphin Street’, ‘Body and Soul’, ‘Just in Time’ and ‘Invitation’, but Margitza’s playing is just so plain clever that it all somehow manages to sound fresh; ‘Just in Time’ is the highlight, on which Margitza only deigns to play the melody after the very thorough deconstruction is complete, and before the best part of all, which is the coda.
