Bande à parte
When I saw this Norwegian band live, one of drummer Jon Christensen’s drumsticks flew out of his hand and into the audience; I caught it. That is not why I have included this spacey, atmospheric ESP album on my list however. The main reason is that I love the incredibly dramatic and original track ‘Sort Of’, on which tenor saxophonist Tore Brunborg apparently imitates whale-song against the backdrop of Christensen’s apparently native-American inspired drumming, punctuated by leader Arild Anderson’s bass-lines, which lead either to nothing or to a variety of different, but equally spine-chilling, avant-garde chords or melodic fragments. This track plays well loud and in the pitch dark, and the rest of the album sounds better to me every time I put it on; it has done for over twenty years now.
