Sonic Boom

The other master of hard-bop trumpet, along with the more multi-faceted Freddie Hubbard, Morgan’s name on an album is a guarantee of hard-hitting and distinctive modern-mainstream jazz. This is a particularly raw and driving effort, with the unbeatable rhythm section of Cedar Walton, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins, and the wildcard of R&B tenor saxophone star David ‘Fathead’ Newman showing off his jazz chops. The CD comes with another excellent, but entirely unconnected session featuring Julian Priester on trombone and George Coleman on tenor.
