Stax of Sax
I used to really rate alto player Herb Geller, but I went off him and now hardly listen to the albums I once obsessively collected. However, I was right about this one. This is cool jazz pure and simple, with superior players like Vic Feldman on vibraphone and Leroy Vinnegar on bass; it is these two in particular who define the sound of the album, which is essentially summery and bitter-sweet. The solos are excellent throughout, with Geller’s rhythmically busy alto sounding at its best, and the tunes are great too; the first three are by Geller, including ‘The Princess’, which is the highlight of the album.
