Fresh

Always one of the most extreme of the avant-garde tenor players, Lowe is nevertheless perfectly manageable in this unusual set, which eschews the kind of energy blast session he showed himself more than capable of on his earlier Black Beings album, in favour of some space, colour and raggedy swinging. Cellist Abdul Wadud is a defining presence, as are two Thelonious Monk compositions, and the odd-track-out, ‘Chu’s Blues’, sounds like something from a Sun Ra album.
