Tonight

This straight-ahead swinging quintet session, with Terry’s highly distinctive ‘squashy’ trumpet sound and the harmonically adventurous valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, opens with a stunning contrapuntal theme ‘Tête à tête’, and the other nine tracks are almost as good. All the solos are interesting, including those by the underrated pianist Roger Kellaway, although it is above all the superior material and inventive arrangements that make this album so memorable.
