Healing the Pain

Bunky Green is one of those unique figures jazz regularly turns out, a true original, whose abstruse style on alto and soprano saxophones has become surprisingly influential since the 1990s. His playing is both rhythmically and harmonically original: he flutters around within the beat playing lots of quite dissonant notes which are rarely dwelled upon. The opening track ‘The thrill is gone’ features note-bending worthy of Johnny Hodges, and ‘Seashells’ is a particularly impressive demonstration of his odd style against the backdrop of what is essentially straight-ahead contemporary jazz.
