Allen Farnham

5th House

This is an album of unforgettable music from a Canadian pianist who deserves a higher profile. Tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, with his dark mahogany tone and harmonically oblique lines, has a lot to do with the success, as does Tom Farrell’s sophisticated trumpet-work, but Farnham keeps up with his better known sidemen with some inspired, virtuoso solos. What really makes this contemporary-edged, but essentially straight-ahead session special, however, is the choice of material and the inventive arrangements. The highlight is Farnham’s composition ‘Pine Hollow Road’, which ought to be a jazz standard, and is just asking for someone to put lyrics to it.
